two years of auditioning for my own life.

"You'd be so hot if you toned up."
He said it like a compliment. Like he was handing me a gift. IF. I spent two years of my life living inside that IF. And the moment that actually broke me wasn't anything he said. His ex came up on his feed one night and he paused. Two seconds, maybe less. That pause told me exactly where I ranked.
The tía who weighed me with her eyes at every party. The kids who had a nickname for me before I had a personality. The comment sections. The word torta thrown around like it was nothing. Thirty years of people confidently narrating my body to me like I wasn't the one living in it.
And here's the part that still gets me. That whole time, I was trying. I was the one meal prepping on Sundays. I was the one walking every morning, drinking the water, doing the work, making real changes for over a year. None of them saw effort. They only ever saw a body.
That night on the couch, something in me went very quiet. Not broken quiet. Decided quiet.
What living inside the IF actually looked like
What living inside the IF actually looked like
From the outside I looked fine. I was fine. I was funny at dinners. I posted normal things. It looks like buying the dress you actually want and returning it three days later, unworn, tags still on. Wearing the black one instead. Black hides. Black apologizes.
It looks like eating light all day before seeing him so my stomach would behave at dinner. Picking the chair with its back to the window because that light was softer. Doing silent math in every photo. Arm here. Angle here. Stand a little behind his shoulder.
Somewhere around month eight he stopped bringing me to his work things. He never said why. He didn't have to. I wrote the reason in myself, and my version was crueler than anything he would have said out loud.
The night I finally saw it, we were getting ready for a party and I had changed four times. I stood in the closet and thought, I am auditioning. I was auditioning for a relationship I was already in. Then I picked an outfit that hid me, and I went, and I smiled all night.
Forget how it looks. How does my body FEEL?
And the answer stopped me. Because under all that noise, my body had been telling me something for
years, and I'd been too busy defending it to strangers to listen. I felt heavy. Puffy. Bloated. Swollen by the
afternoon. Stagnant, like everything in me was sitting still. Not a weight thing. A flow thing. Thin friends of
mine describe the same feeling. It has nothing to do with size and everything to do with how you feel
walking around inside your own skin.
Every critic in my life had been grading the outside of a house they'd never lived in. I'm the one who lives
here. And the one thing I actually wanted had never been on their list: I wanted to feel light. Moving.
Awake. Like my body was flowing instead of holding.
That's when this stopped being about proving anybody wrong. It became about proving myself right. That I
could learn my own body, take it into my own hands, and build the version of me I'd been dreaming about
since I was that little girl at the party.
So I aimed the pain at my body
So I aimed the pain at my body
I did what women are trained to do with pain. I aimed it at my body.
I dieted at it. I punished it with workouts I hated and called it discipline. Sunday guilt, Monday restart, repeat. And here's the part that made me feel like I was losing my mind. The stricter I got, the more inflated I felt. By evening I was heavy and puffy and swollen in a way that made no sense on paper. I was doing everything right and my body felt more stuck than ever.
I ran out of theories. I genuinely believed the problem was that I wasn't trying hard enough. Which was rich, because trying was all I did.
The part nobody ever told me
The 2am search that changed the whole story.
The part nobody ever told me
Then one night, around 2am, deep in an internet spiral about why I felt swollen all the time, I learned something nobody had ever told me.
Your lymphatic system, the network responsible for moving fluid out of your tissue, has no pump. Your heart pumps your blood. Nothing pumps your lymph. It does not drain unless something physically moves it. Muscle, motion, pressure, massage. When it's sluggish, fluid doesn't leave. It sits. And that sitting is the evening heaviness. The puffiness. The swollen, stuck feeling I had been blaming on my own willpower.
I sat in my bed feeling two things at once. Relief, because it was never a failure of effort. And rage, because I spent years dieting at a problem a diet was never going to touch. I had been punishing myself for fluid.
The first thing I did for my body
instead of against it
A few weeks later I bought a handheld lymphatic drainage tool called the Lumévia Sculpt Wand. A friend of a friend swore by hers, and by then I had read enough to understand what I was looking for. It combines cupping suction, red LED light, warmth, and lymphatic stimulation in one piece, and I use it about ten minutes at night. Always the same direction, from my arms and my legs in toward my lower stomach, the way the fluid is meant to move.
I want to be careful how I say this next part, because it matters more than anything about the device itself.
The first night almost made me cry, and not because of anything the device did. It was because I realized my hands hadn't touched my stomach in years unless they were checking it. Pinching it. Measuring it against yesterday. And now here I was, ten quiet minutes, just taking care of it. It felt unfamiliar. That's the word. Like being nice to myself was a language I used to speak and forgot.
I won't make you any promises, because I hate when these articles do that. I can only tell you how it feels for me. That bloated, inflated feeling I used to carry by evening has calmed way down. My body feels smoother and firmer under my own hands, less puffy, less stuck, like everything is finally moving and draining the way it was always supposed to instead of just sitting there. My clothes sit differently on me now, and I reach for the ones I used to save for someday.
And the part I never thought I'd say out loud: I feel hot again. Not for him. Not for anyone. For me, in my own mirror, on a random Tuesday, with nobody watching.

The happy ending nobody promised me
He's gone, by the way. But I say all of this to say something, to any woman reading this. I grew up being called names. Family, friends, partners, the list is long. And for years I used their words against myself and called it motivation. Girl, it never worked. Not once. So let it go. Let. It. Go. Not for them, for you.
What worked was the opposite. Taking control of my own life. Being consistent with what I said I'd do, even when nobody was watching. I stopped hunting for the thing that would fix me by Friday and built the things I do for myself daily, forever. The oil, the flow, my body finally responding to me. Not a phase. Just how I live now. And somewhere in those nights, everything shifted. I feel hot again. I feel capable again. Turns out everything good takes time, and you're allowed to take it.
I was just tired of feeling like a before photo in my own life.
I'm not anymore.
